Catholic christening at St Paul’s of the Cross

I absolutely love being here for my families when they're baptising their children. When I'm shooting baptisms and christenings, I'm in the zone - I'm on the sidelines of the action, like a formally-dressed ninja, floating in the background with my quiet shutters and silent shoes - but because I'm shooting with a variety of lenses on two camera bodies, I can be in amongst the action capturing every moment you see (and many you don't!). Christenings are a joy to capture too, there's so much beauty and sentiment and ceremony, and everything is instilled with a sense of

Wedding at the NSW State Library + Sydney Mint

Two gorgeous women. A beautiful sunny Sydney day. A walk through Hyde Park. A tear-filled ceremony in the NSW State Library. And a joyful reception at the The Mint. Hey, bibliophiles amongst us - did you know that you can get married in the NSW State Library? Neither did I! If you're a book lover like I am, there's no better place to marry the person you love - surrounded by history, family, and the amazing smell of old books. I can't even tell you how lovely this day was. This wedding contains so many elements that I absolutely love

Cosy autumn newborn session at home

Baby + doona + family + kisses + play + bath + dancing to the Wiggles. What more could you ask for? This gorgeous newborn session with baby Ivy was completed in Sydney's Inner West, in a small townhouse, on a cosy overcast day. Her parents wanted to capture all the little things they love about this season of life, with their two little girls. Things like cuddling up in bed all together in the early morning. Things like little baby baths, and little baby cuddles. Things like dancing in the lounge room, tickling, and taking care of big

A wonderful winery wedding in Canberra: Tash and Tim

Winter weddings are becoming more and more popular and I, for one, am stoked about it. There's nothing better than beautiful winter light, warm fires, amazing foliage and cosy wedding parties. Tash and Tim were married at Brindabella Hills Winery outside Canberra, on a beautiful sunny June afternoon, surrounded by 40 of their nearest and dearest. Brindabella Hills is an absolutely gorgeous location, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to be married in the ACT - the food was lovely, the wine divine, and the ambience sheer perfection. A quick post-ceremony photo shoot around the property with the happy couple

Unposed Orthodox Christening Photography – Chatswood Armenian Apostolic Church

I photograph a lot of christenings, and I'm always intrigued and amazed by the beautiful variations between denominations in the baptism ceremonies. The Armenian Orthodox faith takes the beauty of this ritual up a notch with gorgeous head coverings, multiple priests, and a gorgeous colourful church, and I took such pleasure in capturing this wonderful event and absorbing all of the colour, tradition, and nuances of the day. This gorgeous baptism was held at the Armenian Apostolic Church in Chatswood. Documentary photography (also called unposed photography) is perfect for a christenings and baptisms, because a documentary photographer like myself is trained and

Prue Vickery Photography – Unconventional Wedding Locations

Weddings come in all shapes and sizes, a fact that I love to celebrate. While I’ve photographed my wonderful share of big white church weddings, I specialise in smaller, offbeat weddings that sometimes walk a little on the wild side. I just love the idea that a wedding can be so many different things, and can express a couple’s loves and tastes so uniquely. And sometimes these weddings take place in places that you’d never imagine! Here are some of the interesting wedding locations I have had the privilege of shooting. It might give you something to think about when

Documentary christening photography – Dimitri in Leichhardt

There's not much like I like better than a gorgeous Greek Orthodox christening in Sydney. This baptism took place at St Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Leichhardt, and the church was filled with family and friends there to celebrate little Dimitri's big day. I just love the love that is evident at christenings - everyone is there for the same purpose, and there are hugs and kisses and cuddles galore. My documentary approach to coverage is ideal for occasions like this, where an eagle eye and a silent foot is a pre-requisite, and where people don't want to be disturbed in the moment or

Unposed wedding photography – Emma and Dan in Kangaroo Valley

I wish I could show you every single one of the photographs from this beautiful wedding, but we'd be here all day, frankly, and I really don't think my bandwidth would cope. Emma and Dan were married in the Kangaroo Valley at a little farmstay called Broger's End. This gorgeous location is relatively secluded in the valley, surrounded by paddocks and trees and feeling for all the world like a country wedding paradise. The short, intimate ceremony was held in the dairy garden and the beautiful reception in the huge converted shed, with a barbecue buffet and the most amazing cake you've

Unposed wedding photography in Hunter Valley – Liz and Tom

Are these guys just perfection, or what? Liz and Tom were married at the Starline Alpaca Farm Stay in Broke, NSW. They are both vegetarians and are enormous animal lovers, so it seemed only right for them to be married on a farm surrounded by beautiful (if a little feisty) animals. The Hunter Valley region is notorious for its beautiful scenery, lovely people and great food, and it certainly delivered this for them with their lovely outdoor wedding under the gums and wonderful vegetarian buffet reception in the intimate, light-filled reception hall. What I loved most about this wedding was the simplicity and

Unposed newborn photography: Julian takes a bath

Who knew that just taking a bath could capture the fragility, the exquisiteness, the brand-newness of a baby? This is just a small part of a session I did with little baby Julian when he was only twelve days new. His parents, and doting big sister, wanted some very relaxed, unposed portraits at their home, which is a small Wahroonga apartment. The bathroom had no windows or natural light, but only using overhead light? No worries. That's your bathroom - that's where you bath your baby every day. You're going to spend a lot of time in there - let's

Unposed surprise wedding – Maeve and Lorenzo

Maeve and Lorenzo invited me to photograph their wonderful and unusual surprise wedding in the small town of Katoomba, in NSW's Blue Mountains. They had told all of their friends that they were meeting at Hotel Blue for themed murder mystery 40th birthday party for Lorenzo, with their guests none the wiser as to their plans. After guests drove through the thick fog and gathered in the amazing lounge for a "present reveal", Lorenzo coyly placed a flower in his buttonhole, a harpist began to play, and then out walked Maeve in an incredible floor-length gown. I can't begin to tell you

Wedding on the beach – Verity and Wazza

Beach. Teal dress. Celebratory piñata. Oh man. This wedding. Ooooooooh, this wedding. Verity and Chris (aka "Wazza") called me because they were looking for some simple, documentary wedding photography that didn't involve spending two hours away from their guests to take posed photographs. They came to the right girl. They were married at Coledale Beach on the NSW south coast, in a nice quiet spot beside the surf club with only their immediate families in attendance; they then had seventy of their nearest and dearest friends gather inside the surf Coledale Surf Club for drinks and nibbles and very light-hearted frivolity. The weather was

Family documentary shoot – Robbie on the farm

This is the third time I have photographed little Robbie and his family - I photographed his amazing mother Bridget while she was pregnant, being loved by her gorgeous horses (you can see it here), and then I photographed Robbie and his parents when he was only a few weeks old (you can see it here!). Horses are a running theme with Bridget's shoots! So when I was called back to photograph Robbie again at fifteen months, in an entirely documentary family photography session, I was so happy. The way I shoot is loose, and relaxed, and pretty much the opposite of in-your-face. Here I

Family shoot – Rory in Scone

Shooting in the Hunter Valley area of New South Wales has always been a serious perk of my job - I love the scenery, the people, the horses, the relaxed atmosphere - I love pretty much everything about it. (You can see a previous shoot of a Scone maternity and newborns here and here!) I photographed young Rory and his lovely parents when he was a wrinkly little newborn, and I was so honoured to be asked to come to document him at five months old. Family documentary photography has become my obsession and my passion, and I just can't do anything photographically that

Christening shoot – Catholic Christening in Waverley

Recently I photographed the christening of gorgeous little Georgia at Mary Immaculate Church, in Waverley. I really enjoy documenting orthodox and traditional ceremonies such as these because they always come with such a sense of occasion and are filled with such wonderful traditions, and this Catholic ceremony in this spectacular church was no exception. I think my favourite part of the ceremony was when the Georgia's cousin, unable to contain her enthusiasm nor bear the crying of the newly baptised baby any longer, ran up twirling to the steps of the altar to greet her favourite baby. She held her hand, made
