Maeve and Lorenzo invited me to photograph their wonderful and unusual surprise wedding in the small town of Katoomba, in NSW’s Blue Mountains. They had told all of their friends that they were meeting at Hotel Blue for themed murder mystery 40th birthday party for Lorenzo, with their guests none the wiser as to their plans. After guests drove through the thick fog and gathered in the amazing lounge for a “present reveal”, Lorenzo coyly placed a flower in his buttonhole, a harpist began to play, and then out walked Maeve in an incredible floor-length gown.
I can’t begin to tell you how amazed and joyful and excited their friends and family were, and I wish I could convey to you how beautiful and emotional their whole wedding ceremony was. But I can’t, so I’m not going to try. I guess you just had to be there.
After their wonderful surprise ceremony, we went for a short drive up to Sublime Point (aptly named) to do a short unposed portrait session looking out over the fog in the mountains. We then returned to all of their friends dressed to the nines in 1920s garb, ready for their murder mystery reception, where they partied long in to the night, long after I’d gone home on a party-induced high.
This was one of my absolute favourite examples of the phrase, “A wedding is whatever you want it to be.” Maeve and Lorenzo chose their people, their location, and their reception to be a perfect representation of their fun and generous natures, and held a wedding that will not be forgotten by anyone in attendance. These are the kinds of weddings that I want to shoot every damn weekend of the year. Having a great wedding that’s outside the box? Follow Maeve and Lorenzo, and call me immediately.
