Dance portrait shoot – Nush

Beautiful Nush took me out in to the hidden tunnels of Ashfield to capture some glorious urban art... in the form of passionate dance. A portfolio for her and a breath of fresh air for me. I'd love to see some more dancers mixed in with the world, ready to be immortalised on film. Ballerinas in the bush? Breakdancers in the shallow waves of the beach? Tap dancers in the city in the rain? Who's up for it? There's more to come with Nush, including the session I placed her in my studio and enveloped her in clouds of flour...

Aspergers, disabilities and photography

In my previous blog post here, I showed you a large family that I shot in a park, complete with three generations and lots of fun props. There's a bit more to that shoot than meets the eye (as there so often is in this life!). One of the children, little O, has Aspergers. It manifests itself in many ways, one of them being an extreme aversion to cameras. If he had felt I was photographing him, his reaction would have been very unpleasant. He is also incredibly active and moves at about a bazillion miles per hour, almost literally

Family shoot – Mai and co

My friend Mai has a family that is spread across countries and cultures. A wonderful mix of Australian, American, Chinese and Zimbabwean genes have created a bunch of people who breach the divides of beauty. So when Mai's sister and her children flew in from the USA for a visit for the first time in years, they were quick to book me in for a shoot to capture them all together. Mai didn't want anything too structured or posed, so we visited a park in Glebe, took along a lot of fun things to do, and then they all just

Commercial shoot – Lonsdale

I previously posted about my friend Mai and her photographs for Miss Inked 2012 here, to which many wolf-whistles were heard all around the blogosphere. Well, we've since teamed up with Lonsdale to cross-promote the Inked competition with these tough and muscly shots.   Mai wears current Lonsdale stock in each shot. You can vote for her in Inked's competition on Facebook here!

Family shoot – Catherine and Chris

This shoot is pretty special to me. I photographed Catherine and Chris's wedding three years ago (you can see some images here), and was so excited to now photograph them again since their little tribe had grown so much. With a two-year-old son, Lachie, and new ten-month old twins Benjamin and Charlotte, this young family were an absolute joy to photograph. We started in a park in Ashfield, then when the inevitable toddler tantrums kicked in we moved back to my studio and relaxed while the babies played with toys and Lachie enjoyed his favourite thing - bubbles! I'm finding

Newborn shoot – Rosie and her babies

A simple shoot in our Ashfield studio with Rosie and her little ones, Xolani and Phoenix, turned out to be one of my favourite newborn shoots so far. With all natural light, softly glowing through the windows and lighting up the smiles of these Nigerian beauties, how could it go wrong? The studio became a bubble wonderland as Xolani was fascinated by them. How funky and gorgeous and happy is this little family? I look forward to seeing both these kids' names up in lights in the future...

Event shoot – Karinn and Adam

I photographed this Winston Hills engagement party for Karinn and Adam, who are possibly the cutest couple I have ever met. Look at them, pretending to cut each other's throat with the cake knife! Kissing unprompted! Being adorable and in love! I stayed for three hours and would have stayed the rest of the night if they'd let me. I gave them hundreds of photos and could have taken a million more. A wonderful party for a wonderful couple - congratulations guys!

INKED Magazine shoot – Miss Mai

These photos are appearing in this month's Inked Magazine as my friend Miss Mai's entry in the Miss Inked competition. I've shot Mai many times, sometimes for her ink and sometimes for her other abundant attributes, not the least of which is her quite magnetic photographability (not a word, you say? I just made it one). We had only thirty minutes in the studio to shoot this session, an impromptu, late night, fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants flurry of music and lights that yielded some sexy results. Good luck, my friend Mai, and may there by much body art beauty in my future...

My Messy Room’s fifth birthday

Summer Hill, in the inner west of Sydney, has a great village feel and a strong community spirit. As a small business owner I feel it's important to support other artists and small business entrepreneurs, so when the funky kids store My Messy Room turned five years old, it was great to see the community rallying around them and confirming their great success. Congratulations to the team - five years in business is nothing to sneeze at. Plus, your store is fantastic and full of the best goodies a kid could ever want. Can I  live with your wooden dinosaurs

Newborn shoot – Nathaniel

Two sweet boys and their sweet mama - this shoot was for Mel and her boys Aidan, two and a half, and Nathaniel, four weeks. Three people who look so much alike you could almost accuse Mel of performing some secret human cloning - almost the only thing setting the two boys apart is Nathaniel's pretty adorable case of microtia in his right ear. Mel is an old friend of mine, and her only brief for this session was to have no photos with her in them. Well, unfortunately for Mel, Nathaniel was having NONE of that, and refused to be put

VIVID Festival – Sydney

I ventured in to Circular Quay one fine, chilly night to photography Hills SVL Group's installation at the Vivid Festival in Sydney. The piece is a huge glowing, pulsating water droplet, with synthesised bells inside that chime with the movement of its occupants. The chimes could be heard reverberating through the Rocks and out across the water, and the glow from the light-panelled walls was ethereal. With a backdrop of the Harbour Bridge as well as a beautiful giant chandelier, it's hard to go wrong. You can see my images featured on their site here.   And of course, the rest of

Newborn shoot – Natasha and Stephanie

One word: superhero. That's the only way I can describe Georgina, mother of 20-month-old Zoë and three-week-old twins Natasha and Stephanie. Despite the clear chaos of having three children under two, her house was cleaner than mine is on a good day, she looked amazing, and she was completely cool, calm and collected even as we attempted to get a family photograph with three wriggly, hungry babes. I could not be more awed! This shoot was definitely an interesting one, but my assistant Dimity and I felt really comfortable in Georgina and her lovely husband's home, and the light was

Portrait shoot – Aydin

This kid could be the cutest baby I have ever seen. Look at the smile! Look at the ears! Look at the ROLLS! Katie and Mohammed's house was a fun challenge to shoot in, due to the quite small rooms and the hard angle of the natural light through the bedroom side of the house. But with a little bounced flash and some creative use of their bedroom mirror as a reflector, the shots took on a lovely studio-esque quality. Doesn't hurt that they are SUCH a beautiful family, of course! In the end I feel I captured the essence

Family shoot – Jess and her munchkins

This may in fact be my favourite shoot I have ever done, not the least because it is so wonderfully personal. Jess has a spot up in the hills of Bilpin, a spot that she's been going to yearly since she was a small girl. An orchard playground and a particular tree, visited every year as the leaves turn yellow and red. Now that Jess has two little people of her own, her yearly visits have taken on a whole new dimension of fun, autumny goodness. This tree is special. It has a magic to it. And not only are

Newborn shoot – Cara

Remember Lisa? Her maternity shoot was a completely new experience and produced some absolutely gorgeous images. Well, her beautiful baby was born and all she needed as the crowning glory of her entrance in to this world was a documentary photo shoot showing off her best sides. Trust me, that wasn't hard - this kid has nothing BUT best sides. And, of course, her ridiculously good-looking parents don't make life too hard, either. In her sweet little cloth nappies, little Cara was a sleepy, funny dream. I love this kind of session - relaxed, honest, and quiet, without any bells
