If you’re lucky enough to have your grandparents in your life, or your children are lucky enough to have theirs, then you’ll know that the relationship between family elders and children is something special.
Grandparents get to spoil without repercussions, love without complications, and play without rushing. They’ve basically got it made. (I can’t wait to be a grandparent one day!)
Celebrating the connection between children and their important family members is such a beautiful gift to give, not only to your children, but to the entire family. To record the small details, the time spent together, and the funny moments of everyday life – that’s the gift that keeps on giving, for generations to come. One day your children will show their own children these treasured images from their young lives, and tell them the stories of what it was like when they were small, keeping these moments alive. Because that’s what these kind of documentary images are – physical, tangible, living memories.
These beautiful grandparents invited me in to their home for an unposed family session with their children and their grandchildren – three generations. I wanted to capture not only some features of the house, because but also the intricacies of the loving relationship between the whole family. They didn’t want to pose – they just wanted to enjoy the afternoon together! Of particular importance was the little moments between the oldest and youngest generations, so I asked the family what they normally enjoyed doing together, and what gave them particular joy to share with the children. It was in these funny, happy little moments that the bond became beautifully apparent, and the wonder of grandparenthood really struck me.
The whole gorgeous session just left me thinking – I want to be a grandparent when I grow up!
