There’s a few things that are indescribable in this life. One of them is the heart-swelling and utterly consuming there-is-nothing-else-in-the-world-but-you intimacy of having a newborn baby.
It’s the little things. The little chub rolls. The sound of your baby waking up from a nap with those little grunts and squeaks. Their little hand grasping yours while they feed. The way they stre-e-e-e-e-etch those tiny arms above their heads. The feel of their unbelievably soft skin. The sweet little milk pimples. The way they fit into the crook of your arm, as if they’ve always belonged there.
These things can be hard – impossible! – to communicate in a posed session, because you can’t schedule babies, and you can’t recreate the little things with that perfect lighting.
In my unposed, documentary-style newborn sessions, I always look to explore the small intimate moments between my parents and their babies, always keeping my camera poised for the things that I remember from my own mothering experience, and for other fleeting instants where the bond between a parent and their child is so minute and yet so strong. These are the things you will want to remember about the early days with your baby. Not their perfection, but the realness of every moment you spend together.
I love to photograph parents feeding their babies (however they choose – I am a “fed is best” kinda gal!) because it’s something that features so heavily in the early days, and it is the thing that bonds you to your baby in so many important ways. So many magic moments happen in the quiet feeding times.

You might remember gorgeous Bunny and her gorgeous baby bump back here in this unique maternity session with her mum.
I returned to document the heady early days with her baby boy, Leander. He was having a “food please!” kind of day, so spent most of our session breastfeeding, which was perfect – it made for a relaxing, intimate, and most of all realistic collection of images, that truly reflect this time in their lives. A truly stunning mother-son team, who I could not be luckier to photograph.
Please enjoy this special celebration of the little things.
