Hey, mothers of Artarmon, Sydney. Did you know that documentary-style, candid, relaxed newborn photography can quite literally come to you?

I just want you to know that. Because I love Artarmon, and man, you guys make some absolutely gorgeous babies on that side of the city. Like this little beauty, for instance.

Marcus was two months old when I arrived at his house to photograph him, and I was instantly smitten with his strawberry hair, his lovely little expressions, and of course his best doggy mate Murray. Marcus’s parents wanted something intimate, precious and relaxed for their portraits together – they were keen to veer away from traditional posed baby photography and really capture Marcus in all of his cranky, sleepy, happy, cuddly, squishy glory. They wanted Murray involved, too, as he so often enthusiastically is during their days together.

We spent the afternoon together, and in that time they bathed Marcus, fed him (multiple times… you know how babies are), and through my loving lens I captured so many organic, beautiful little moments to preserve forever this precious time. I think I squealed with joy at least a few times throughout our session just KNOWING that THAT SHOT, right there, THAT is why I came to them. That is what they want on their wall forever. That got his double chins perfectly!

(You should all know how much I love double chins. I really, really do. My love for them is pretty level with my general addiction to baby toes, orange-flavoured dark chocolate, and 90s boy bands. In other ways, I’m a double chin super fan.)

And I want this post to illustrate a point I make really often to people – updating your family photography when a new member arrives (or even when they just grow up a little) does not have to happen within the first two weeks. You can take time to settle in, get comfy, have your lives return to something resembling organised chaos, and then have photographs taken with your new little dictator wonder. They will still be squishy and tiny and amazing, I promise you. Just please don’t think that if you “miss” the window of the first few weeks, gorgeous images are no longer attainable. Gorgeous images are always attainable! Trust me – you’ll look back in twenty years – or maybe even just one or two – and thank yourself.

Marcus and Murray, the cutest baby-dog team I’ve yet encountered. I think I will make them mascots for my business, I love them that much.
