I did a session with one of my favourite ladies, Mel, and her sons in their Blue Mountains home a few months ago, and was asked back to do a full family shoot before Christmas. These lovely people have since decided to do a shoot with me every year, in lieu of Christmas presents to each other – how cool is that?
These guys are about as laid back as they come, and not ones to pose and smile, so I photographed them in their house for a little while, capturing the small moments of them just doing their own thing – making coffee, reading books, Nate wearing his hearing aid, a bit of rough and tumble – just the usual morning activities. The boys get cabin fever pretty easily so we took a wander up to their local bushland, and had a bit of a play.
Their oldest boy, at this stage, was not terribly enamoured of his new little brother, and usually steadfastly refused to touch him or encourage his affection in any way. So imagine our delight and surprise when he reached out to hold hands with him, unprompted, and then later bestowed him with a cuddle and a sneaky arm kiss! Glory days!
We joke together a lot about how Mel is an enormous bogan (as a western Sydney girl myself, this is no insult!), so when they all whipped out their flannel shirts for a shot towards the end, I couldn’t have been happier. What good sports, and what an awesome family. I know I’m a bit older than the usual, but I wonder if they’d consider adopting me?
A really relaxed, easy-going day, which is absolutely my favourite kind. Great images come out of the everyday, leaking through the small cracks of the mundane.
Bush frolicking – it’s good for the soul. And, so it happens, for the camera.
