Marion and Jonathan, a Canberra-residing military couple, just wanted some nice, intimate, natural, relaxed photos of their family, in a place that they loved, on the one weekend they were in Sydney to have a session with me. That’s all. Nothing fancy. Just some photos of them laying in the grass with their ridiculously adorable baby at their favourite northern Sydney picnic spot, Green Point. Not too much to ask.
But what do you do when it’s raining, and your spot is wet, and your baby doesn’t like the rain?
You make sure your photographer brings some umbrellas, you hold your baby extra close, and you dance in that rain anyway. Your hairstyle gets frizzy and your shirt gets wet and you almost fall over in the slippery grass, but you’re having fun and you’re laughing and you’re giddy in love and in the end the photos are completely genuine because you’re not worrying about how you look, you’re just absolutely enjoying the ridiculousness of that moment.
That’s what I love about photography. That’s what I love about what I do. That’s what I love about capturing these days with my clients. It’s most often not about constructing a scene and creating memories – it’s about allowing yourself to let someone in to see what’s really there.
Shoots don’t always go to plan. But let a little rain stop us from getting lovely family photographs? Never.
